Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Carlos.

I'm a Graphic Designer.

Everything started with a friend and a book. I was asked to design the publication of his research he did while teaching. That was 1994, when I was a junior copywriter at Contrapunto/BBDO and had access to an incredibly fast Macintosh II, a scanner and a really good 1993 printer. At that time, I teamed up with another copywriter, providing ideas to our CDs, so both of us got interested in art direction and graphic design after 5PM.

From my very first experience to present day a lot of things have happened. In 2003, I studied art direction, typography, photography and graphic design at Emily Carr Institute for Art and Design and joined Rethink Vancouver as an Art Director. I've done all kinds of visually-related work: graphic design, art direction for advertising, photography, web design, film editing, graphics in motion for ads, film credits and effects, etc. Today, I spend more time in photoshop and design applications than in Microsoft Word. Probably.

As you will see, my design style is based in very simple, witty, subtle ideas. Like the ones that a copywriter would have
.

But let's stop using words and enter the visual realm.

Purr

Is a small creative shop in Madrid. They do everything from traditional ads to design, internet content to film writing. Their name comes from two brothers that were really happy to be able to start their own company and work in whatever creative project they wanted. Today it's a small, independent film company.

The website displays their work, but pink clouds constantly appear from left to right in different sizes and at different speeds getting in the way of your view (like when you're so in love that you can't concentrate). They disappear when clicked on.

By the way, I'm one of the two brothers.

Al Sur del Ojo

Is a Photographic and Visual Arts Studio. These two guys (uncle and nephew) are from Costa Rica so they wanted to communicate their South-American background and approach to photography: bright, colorful, alive, passionate and energetic. So, the sun as a symbol seemed to suit them very well. Not to mention that light is the basis of photography. They agreed. www.alsurdelojo.com

Animático

They create animatics for presentations or research. A company that combines the latest editing and animation technology with paper and pencils. The name evokes a combination of animatic and automático in spanish, textually and visually.

This is an example of what they do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swDCfoDagvc

Il Pizzaiolo

Is a well known, family owned, small pizzeria in Madrid. (Nope, nothing to do with the Canadian chain :)

They have a very small space, always full and with an unique atmosphere. After a few years of total success, they moved to a bigger space, redid their corporate identity and started delivery in the neighborhood. I helped them with the graphic design. We wanted a simple, contemporary design, so we tried to avoid italian topics, colours, the flag, gondolas, etc. I got paid in excellent italian food (for months).

Every piece can be folded into a box with its pizza. I can't wait to add one of those scented inks to the design.

Salvaje Films

A small, independent film production company. They wanted to communicate something more sophisticated, and cinematic oriented than the idea of just pure "wild". So, no animals, weapons, blood, rough effects, scratched type… just a little bit of Bogart and film noir. The website is still in the "under construction" stage (i guess they are very busy producing films).

Why? Tutoring

A small Vancouver-based tutoring for kids company. They had the name and a logo, but my friend Jonathan and I redesigned it and made their website from scratch. Simpler, easy to use, more direct. Also, they needed a small ad for a parents/students publication, so we did that too.
